The Ahlul Bayt Islamic Centre [Al Hussain] is situated at Milltown Bridge, Dublin, and is commonly known as ‘Hussainia’. It is the only Shia Muslim Islamic centre in the whole of Ireland.
It aims to serve the social, cultural and spiritual needs of the entire Shia Muslim population of Ireland, and it draws Shia members from throughout the country, particularly at festival times and during Ramadan. At present there are about 2,000 Shia working, studying and living in Ireland
Much like the Islamic Foundation of Ireland, the foundation of Hussainia was laid by a few ShiaShia Muslims living and working in Ireland and as the numbers grew the time came to find a bigger and better space to serve properly the socio-cultural and religious need of this small but growing community.
Tapping into their own resources, the community decided to build a proper centre and in September 1996 Hussainia, Ahlul Bayt Shia Islamic Centre, was officially opened in Milltown, Dublin. It has a full-time resident imam, Sayyed Ali Abdullah, a qualified medical doctor educated in Ireland
The Centre is a wonderful resource for Shia Muslims in Dublin. It is an active and vibrant Islamic institution, open every day for afternoon and evening prayers, with
Dua-e-Kumayal every Thursday after evening prayers and regular lectures. On Saturdays there are talks and meals together to help inform the community and to build relationships. There is evident social commitment among the community and clear efforts to support one other in developing their spiritual lives. Friday prayers are well attended, even by those living far from the Dublin area, and the community conscientiously gathers to mark the various observances set down in the Shia calendar.
